Smiling girl wearing a yellow T-shirt and sunglasses in the summer sun

Sun, Heat and Sensitive Skin

Who doesn't love the feel of those first rays of sunshine after (finally!) packing away our winter sweaters? Although when summer sets in, so too do the heat, UV rays and air conditioning, which can all make our skin feel extra sensitive. It’s not all doom and gloom, though. There are ways to manage how skin feels when things start to heat up!

Heat

Feeling hot and bothered? We hear you! Hot weather increases water loss from the body, leading to dehydration. This can cause skin to feel irritated, red and dry, so make sure to hydrate your skin and keep water levels topped up. Summer heat tends to mean more sweat, more oil and speedier skin cell production too. When dead skin cells mix with this excess oil and sweat, it’s hello, acne breakout. Outsmart summer skin sensitivity and switch to a summer skincare routine at the start of the season.

Sun

We know too much sun can damage your skin’s moisture barrier, leading to lost elasticity, dryness and even premature aging. It doesn't have to feel hot for your skin to feel the sun’s damaging effects: rays can reach through glass, so don’t forget the SPF for your SXSW road trip. Spending summer by the sea? Lucky you! Water can mean double-trouble for skin, bouncing UV rays onto your skin twice, so keep slapping on that SPF! Lastly, don’t save the SPF for hotter moments. Slot one into your everyday routine (and reapply regularly too!) to stay sun savvy.

Air conditioning

Air conditioning. An instant ahh for us. An irritated argh for our skin. Read more about air conditioning as a sensitive skin trigger here.
