So now you know what can cause sensitive skin.  But don’t worry, with the right products and right routine you can actually reduce the sensitivity of your skin and keep it looking and feeling healthy. 

 

With 50 years of knowledge and expertise here are our top tips to help you with your sensitive skin.


Choose the right products

Avoid products with artificial perfumes, dyes or harsh chemicals in them. These can be triggers for sensitive skin and using gentler products that are kind to skin can be a big benefit.


Hydration

Your whole body needs a healthy dose of water, keeping hydrated is important to keep you healthy on the inside and the outside. So avoid that thirsty feeling by drinking plenty of fluids. Water’s the best, but you can also hydrate with herbal teas and fruit juices. If you’re feeling thirsty it’s a sign that you aren’t drinking enough, so try keeping some water beside you to drink throughout the day. 


Adjust with the seasons

Your skin reacts differently to different kinds of weather, so listen to your skin and make sure you adapt your routine to help your skin out. For colder weather try richer moisturizers to keep that moisture in, and of course for hotter, sunnier climates you may want to try lighter products and make sure you’re topping up your SPF. If the changes in the season make your skin feel a bit rough or dull – add an exfoliator.

Sun exposure

We know from research that increased exposure to the sun’s UV rays can increase the level of sensitivity in skin. When you’re out and about always use a SPF moisturizer to protect your skin from UV exposure, and keep your skin moisturized too. 


Get a good skincare routine in place

Be gentle 

If you’re prone to sensitivity and irritation, it’s even more important to treat your skin with kindness. When drying your skin never rub your skin as the friction can cause irritation. Instead gently pat it dry with a soft towel to minimize unwanted irritation


Quit smoking 

Smoking doesn’t just affect your health; it does no good for your skin either. We know it’s hard to quit, but you never know, a few positive changes in your skin could be the motivation you need.  


Find the right foods for you 

Certain foods can trigger flare-ups. The best way to see if your diet is affecting your skin is to keep a diary of everything you eat and drink. This could help you pinpoint any offenders. Our Simple® Advisory Board  can help you find skin loving foods to add to your diet.


Deep sleep 

A lack of sleep means that your skin isn’t repairing itself to the best of its ability. This means it’s more prone to damage from external factors and your skin Barrier isn’t functioning. A good night’s sleep will help you feel more refreshed but also help your skin function properly.


Patch test  

It can be tough knowing which products your skin is sensitive to. When you start using a new product, do a patch test to see how it affects your skin.  If you notice any irritation, stop using the product. If you don’t, then carry on!


Keep skin fresh and clean! 

Our skin Barrier function struggles when skin isn’t cleansed properly. So when you get home make sure you’re taking your make-up off before you cleanse your face. Often traces of make-up can remain on skin when you think you’ve removed it and this can affect the function of the skin Barrier and how skin repairs itself.
